Autumn Equinox Routine Shifts to Support Your Skin Health

Seasonal shifts are felt viscerally throughout the body. The change in light patterns, air texture, daily schedule, and what produce is on the shelves can elicit a different orientation to how we move through our day, what we crave, and how we feel in our body. Our cyclical being thrives on these shifts, as it’s an invitation to pause, take stock, and step through the next door with intentionality. Routines are not stagnant, and while foundational habits should remain as the scaffolding, seasonal changes are welcomed.

Because the skin is a bi-directional organ, it is especially in-tune with changes in your external environment. Less sunlight, drier air, and pendulum swing temperatures all inform your skin’s ability to regulate water loss, immune function, and barrier integrity. This doesn’t mean the skin hasn’t been here before and won’t find balance, but it’s an opportunity to use different tools to support it in the process.

Three routine shifts for supported skin health—

  1. Bone broth as your pre-breakfast. A true super food, bone broth contains essential minerals, electrolytes, collagen peptides, healthy fats, and provides the body with gel hydration. Having it first thing in the morning will warm up your GI tract, bolster your lymph fluid, and give your skin all the nutrients it needs to build and protect itself.

  2. Use a balm as the last step of your nighttime skincare routine. Balms are thicker than a standard face oil because they contain a waxier lipid that is more occlusive (less penetrative) than a thinner lipid that comes in a dropper bottle. This is important because it acts as a shield that locks in your other products in while you sleep so that the dry air doesn’t get the best of you.

  3. Create blood and lymph flow by bringing back regular hot baths. The type of flush that a hot bath, sauna, or steam elicits can provide essential nutrients and oxygen to the skin’s tissue, create lymph flow for improved detox, and help with cellular stress adaptation.
